Me with my bike ~ April 24, 2010

Saturday was a beautiful day in Upstate, NY.  Michael and I went out on our motorcycles.  It was kind of a big deal because I haven’t really gotten the chance to ride my bike for any distance since the end of 2008.  Last season when I took it out I pulled a few muscles trying to hold it up when it didn’t want to keep the shiny side up.  So this season I decided that I really want to ride again.  We went out to Richfield Springs – 132 miles round trip.  We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather.  Not too hot, not too cold.

Michael on his bike with the LowePro camera bag he is reviewing.

This is Michael on his bike.  He’s demoing a LowePro Flipside 300 camera bag that he’s going to write a review for.  He wanted to test it out on the bike and see how things went.  It looks like it was pretty comfortable.

What did you do or what do you plan to do this weekend?

Shawn after fulfilling his groomsman duties....

While brainstorming about what to write blogs about, I wanted to find a way for my readers to get to know some of the awesome people who I know.  The best way I could come up with was an interview series.

Meet my friend ShawnShawn is a wonderful friend who is also known as Isabella’s God-Father Uncle Shawn.

Name: Shawn Powers

Age: 30

Location: Schenectady NY

Relationship Status: Single

Occupation: Retail Management, Geek Extraordinaire

What is the most challenging part of your job? Keeping cool in the face of utter madness.

What do you want to do when you grow up?
Do I have to?  I guess it would be to either be some type of computer technician, or software design.  They say if you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.

Is you had to choose between football and computers, which would you choose and why?
You’re really making me answer this???  Sigh… Football is more fun

What is the strangest thing that’s every happened to you on a date?
I got stuck in my truck in the snow, in the middle of nowhere, with no cell phone service, so I walked up the road to call a tow truck, who was crazy and moved my truck by nearly backing it into a ditch.  Yeah, that was fun.

Since you’re a single guy, and single gals might be reading this, tell us what makes you stand out compared to all the other guys out there.
Hmm, I guess the fact that I am a good guy.  (I have 2 girls sitting here telling me to type that.  Take that for what you will J )

What’s always in your refrigerator?
Water & condiments.  Once in a while I’ll actually put food in it too, just to be different.

Shawn with his Dad Dana and his Sister Melinda

Tell us about your hometown of New Philadelphia, OH.
Typical small town America, a place you can feel safe walking down the street.  I think my friend put it best when he traveled home with me on vacation. He said it was the friendliest town he had ever been in.  Football is a passion so much more so than here.  Everyone doesn’t know everyone else, but it’s homey.

What was your New Year’s Resolution? To stop making resolutions!

What’s your favorite amusement park? Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH.

What’s your dream car?
I like the Honda CRZ a lot, but I think if you put a gun to my head, it would be the new Chevy Camaro.

What do you think are key traits in a great friend?
It needs to be someone who can listen, be there when you need them most, and someone who can be trusted.

Helen Keller Quote about Happiness

I get forwards all the time from various friends of mine.  Most of them I’ve seen over and over and over….
I don’t think I’ve ever seen this one and it caught my eye.
I would change the title of it though to How to Have a Happier Life
I’ll leave my comments in parenthesis and italics

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Throw out nonessential numbers. This includes age, weight and height. Let the doctors worry about them. That is why you pay ‘them’
(Why do we care so much about these things.  Weight I can understand a little bit.  A person can change their weight with some effort.  Stressing about age and height though…  these are two things in your life that no matter how hard you try you will not change, so why waste the energy?)

2. Keep only cheerful friends. The grouches pull you down.
(I tell all my friends “rid your life of toxic people and do whatever you can to keep toxic people out of your life.”)

3. Keep learning. Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let the brain idle. ‘An idle mind is the devil’s workshop.’
(I like this one ALOT!!  Sometimes learning something from a child is kinda cool too….)

4. Enjoy the simple things.
(Like listening to nature around you.  Hugging the one’s you love.  Smiling at a stranger and watching it make their day.  Read a book.  Write a blog.)

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
(Make sure you really mean it though.  When all else fails find something on comedy central or call my friend Scott, he can make almost anyone laugh….)

6. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person, who is with us our entire life, is ourselves. Be ALIVE while you are alive.
(It’s okay to cry.  Use them to heal yourself, but don’t dwell on the bad things….)

7. Surround yourself with what you love , whether it’s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.
(This is another great one!  Friends, family, pets, motorcycles etc….)

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.
(This means quit smoking and try to eat a little bit healthier than you used to.  I’ve been trying to cook more new things and sometimes it helps.)

9. Don’t take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county; to a foreign country but NOT to where the guilt is.
(To me guilt is worthless.  Remind yourself why what you did was wrong, and do your best not to repeat the mistake.  Dwelling on it won’t change it, just vow to be better in the future.)

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.
(This is one of the most important on the list.  Always tell those you love that you do love them every chance you get because you might not get another chance.  You don’t ever want to lose someone and then later wonder if they knew that they were loved….)

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER :
Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Worry about nothing, pray about everything!!!

I hope you all enjoyed this.

What advice do you have to share to have a happier life?
What makes you happy?

Let’s say that a hurricane was coming to totally wipe out the town where you live.

You’ve got 15 minutes to grab what you can and evacuate.

The 15 minutes are over.

What’s inside your vehicle?

I’ve never blogged seriously, but lately have some friends who seem to be doing it more and more often.

I figured I’d give it a whirl.  I’m not sure what I should blog about, so give me ideas of what you’d like to

read that you’d find entertaining.

In other news, I just got a new phone.  It’s an HTC Touch Pro 2.  I’m trying to figure out what apps to put on it.  I didn’t realize how much some apps cost!  For now I have Facebook.  I need to figure out which Twitter application to install and also something to view eBay auctions.  So if any of you have a Windows based phone let me know which apps you enjoy.

New Year Resolution
Continued from last year.  To try not to stress out about things that I cannot change.  Be optimistic.  There’s no sense in stressing out and being negative right?  I’m VERY optimistic that 2010 is going to be a great year for us 🙂

Did you make a New Years Resolution and if so what was it, and is it one you’ve made in the past?
