A friend of mine forwarded this to me today and there seems to be a lot of good tips.  I figured I’d pass this along!

Do you have other household tips to share??

  • Take your bananas apart when you get home from the store. If you leave them connected at the stem, they ripen faster.
  • Store your opened chunks of cheese in aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer and not get moldy.
  • Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the bottom are firmer and better for cooking.
  • Add a teaspoon of water when frying ground beef. It will help pull the grease away from the meat while cooking.
  • To make scrambled eggs or omelets really rich, add a couple of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream cheese, or heavy cream, then beat them up and cook as usual.
  • For a cool brownie treat, make brownies as directed. Melt Andes mints in a double boiler and pour over warm brownies. Let set for a wonderful minty frosting.
  • Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if your want a stronger taste of garlic.
  • Use mini snickers bars to make a delicious dessert. Simply chop them up with the food chopper. Peel, core and slice a few apples. Place them in a baking dish and sprinkle the chopped candy bars over the apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream. Yummm!
Reheating Pizza
Reheat leftover pizza in a non-stick skillet on top of the stove; set heat to med-low and heat till warm. This keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro pizza. I saw this on the cooking channel and it really works.

Easy Deviled Eggs
Put cooked egg yolks in a zip lock bag. Seal, mash till they are all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients, re-seal, keep mashing it up mixing thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy, squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag away when done. Easy clean up.

Extending Frosting
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You can double it in size. You get to frost more cake/cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar and calories per serving.

Reheating refrigerated bread
To warm biscuits, pancakes or muffins that were refrigerated, place them in a microwave with a cup of water. The increased moisture will keep the food moist and help it reheat faster.

Newspaper weeds-away
Start putting in your plants, work the nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers, put layers around the plants overlapping as you go. Cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic but they will not get through wet newspapers.

Broken Glass
Use a wet cotton ball or Q-tip to pick up the small shards of glass you can’t see easily.

No More Mosquitoes
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes away.

Squirrel Away!
To keep squirrels from eating your plants, sprinkle them with cayenne pepper (the plants, not the squirrels). 😉 The cayenne pepper doesn’t hurt the plant and the squirrels won’t come near it. (We found this works for deer as well to keep them out of our roses. Put some cayenne pepper in an old nylon stocking and tie the stocking to the rose bush. Saved the rose buds and we had beautiful roses last summer.)

Flexible vacuum
To get something out of a heat register or from under the fridge, add an empty paper towel roll or empty gift wrap roll to your vacuum. It can be bent or flattened to get into narrow openings.

Reducing Static Cling
Pin a small safety-pin to the seam of your slip and you will not have a clingy skirt or dress. Same thing works with slacks that cling when wearing panty hose. Place pin in seam of slacks and… ta da! Static is gone.

Measuring Cups
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup, fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don’t dry cup. Next, add your ingredient, such as peanut butter, and watch how easily it comes right out.

Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car. When the windows fog, rub with the eraser! Works better than a cloth.

Reopening Envelopes
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to include something inside, just place your sealed envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Voila! It unseals easily.

Use your hair conditioner to shave your legs. It’s cheaper than shaving cream and leaves your legs really smooth. It’s also a great way to use up the conditioner you bought but didn’t like when you tried it in your hair.

Goodbye Fruit Flies
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it 1/2 way with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dishwashing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies drawn to the cup and gone forever!

Get Rid of Ants
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it, take it ‘home,’ can’t digest it, so it kills them. It may take a week or so, especially if it rains, but it works and you don’t have the worry about pets or small children being harmed!

The heating unit went out on my dryer. The gentleman that fixes things around the house told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load of clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material. I’m sure you know what your dryer’s lint filter looks like. Well…the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn’t go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh and that’s what burns out the heating unit. You can’t see the film, but it’s there. It’s what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free…that nice fragrance, too. You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box…well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down. He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. That preserves the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?! Learn something new every day! I certainly didn’t know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I’d share!

Note: I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it…the water ran right through the screen! There wasn’t any puddling at all! That repairman knew what he was talking about!

Betty White with the cast of The Golden Girls

Something occurred to me around the time of the Super Bowl.  At what point are we proud to be old?  I got thinking about it when I saw Betty White all over the place.  We all know her from The Golden Girls but that was 20ish years ago.  She’s been in many things – just check out her IMDB profile…  Recently she was in the movie The Proposal with Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds.  She won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAG Awards.  (The press release from them was awesome!!)  Then she was in the Snicker’s commercial during the Super Bowl.  Next I was asked to join (back then it was still join – instead of “like”) the Betty White to Host SNL (Please?)! fan page on Facebook.

Betty White at the SAG Awards

After it was confirmed that Betty White will be hosting SNL, Larry King had her on his show Larry King Live for an interview.  (March 17, 2010)  Larry made a comment that Betty was 88 years young.  He said when you get to be that age you’re proud to say it.  Betty replied that she didn’t know where the breaking point was.  “at first you try to hide it and then you begin to brag about it.  Now I’m to the point of hello, I’m Betty White, I’m 88.

KING: How do you explain your longevity?

WHITE: Sheer, blind luck.  I’m the luckiest old broad that ever drew breath.

KING: Just luck?

WHITE: Just…

KING: No talent?WHITE: Well, I mean I think – I think the reason for the longevity is that people have generations – several generations have – have gotten to know me over the years.  So I’ve become sort of part of a – you know, you have relatives that you’re not thrilled with – sort of part of the family.

Later in the interview Larry asked her about her age again:

KING: Did you ever think you would be 88?  Or you don’t think about it?

White: I think I learned at my mother’s knee, we never thought age.  Everybody else is so age conscious.  You go for a long time – no, not wanting anybody to know how old you are.  And then you pass a breaking point.  I can’t tell you where that comes, where then you brag about it.  I don’t think – it’s my health and my energy that I’m so blessed with and so grateful for, that I’m busy being grateful for that, rather than worrying about how old I am.

Betty White on Larry King Live

I got a good laugh when Larry asked her about if she got “romantic urges” and then later said “Last night was terrific, right?” and then about a month later he and his wife are separated….

Betty White

This weekend is what 509,240 (at the time I’m writing this) fans of the Betty White to Host SNL (Please?)! page have been waiting for.  This Saturday night May 8th Betty White WILL be hosting Saturday Night Live.  I’m planning to set my DVR for it, but I’m also hoping to be able to watch it live from my hotel room while I’m on vacation.

I wish I knew at what point we’re supposed to go from “29 and holding” to being proud of our age.  I asked my Mother when she noticed it in my Grandmother and she thought it was sometime in her 80’s.  It’s almost as if she was thinking “I’m proud to be 97, I’ve outlived all those other people!

Hopefully one day I’ll be a bold, full of life, outgoing older woman like Betty and my Grandma 🙂

Have you ever thought about this?  Do you see it with some of the older people in your life?

Please comment and subscribe.

As many of you know I don’t give a crap about football.  The game moves too slowly for me and I get pretty bored.  The only game of the year I’ll tend to watch is the Super Bowl.  I watch it for the commercials.  This year had some funny ones, but none of them beat my all time favorite Blockbuster ad.  I think it was from 2007.  Click the link and let me know what you think.  I laugh my ass off hilariously every single time I see it!!

My favorites this year were:

Snickers Ad with Betty White
I thought this was hilarious!!  Betty White has been incredible this past year!!  At 88 years old I’ve got to admire her.  She was in The Proposal.  She won a Lifetime Achievement Award at the SAG Awards.
Now she’s in this hilarious commercial.  What next?

Doritos – Anti Bark Collar
I think I really appreciated this one because I have a dog.

Budweiser Human Bridge
I wonder if we’ll hear about a bunch of people getting run over by a beer truck in the near future.
Don’t try this at home kids!!

Budweiser – House of Beer
This one was just funny.  Nope, they’re full!

Budweiser – Plane Wreck
Obviously this commercial was pointing at LOST.  Not a bad angle if you ask me.  Personally I’d have called for a rescue team and asked them to bring better beverages….

E*Trade – Wolf Style
Love the “Milkaholic” comment!  LOL!

Google – Search On
What googling “Studying Abroad” can lead to.  😉  I want to go to Paris….

Letterman/Oprah/Leno – The Late Show
I worried about this one a little bit.  I wondered if Leno would get in trouble for being in an ad for the competition.
Sounds like it’s okay though according to this article.

And on a side note, I liked The Who at the halftime show.  Though I thought Roger Daltry looked about ready to have a heart attack during that harmonica solo.  I thought Pete Townshend rocked pretty good for an older guy.  He was dancing around and having a great time.  🙂
