Many of you don’t know, but I was married on May 22, 1999.  Today would have been my 11 year wedding anniversary.  A friend and I often talk about divorce rates.  Our parents are both still married and it’s the first marriage for all of them.  We think part of the reason was, back in the 50’s & 60’s divorce was very taboo and airing your dirty laundry was frowned upon.  Couples worked through problems.  Today it is so acceptable, most people don’t even attempt to save a marriage that’s in trouble.  In my eyes, many things are worth working on, and certain things are unforgivable.  It’s a fine line for many.

Does anyone have any theories why divorce rates shot through the roof in the 70’s?
I’m sure the statistics and reasons are online somewhere but I’m too tired to look!!

While brainstorming about what to write blogs about, I wanted to find a way for my readers to get to know some of the awesome people who I know.  The best way I could come up with was an interview series.

Meet my friend Jessica.  I’ve known Jessica since we were in high school.  We lost touch after graduation, but we were able to reconnect on Facebook last year.  So without further ado – get to know Jessica.

Jessica Traver

Name: Jessica Traver

Age: 30

Location: Staatsburg, NY

Jessica & Gary on their wedding day ~ February 14, 2004

Relationship Status: Married

Children: Giselle 4 years old

Occupation: Stay at Home Mom

What is the most challenging part of your job? trying to keep a 4 year old from not being bored

We’ve known each other since high school.  How do you think you’ve changed since then? Well I am not the wild child I once was, becoming a mother has mellowed me

You’re a stay-at-home Mom.  How do you think this will impact your daughter? I think being home with her shows her a surplus amount of love and support and will give us a greater bond.

The Traver Family

What do you think is the biggest challenge of being a stay-at-home? Wondering if my parenting skills are up to par, and hoping that I will instill the best in my daughter. There is no one to pat you on the back, since I feel most husbands feel its not a job.

Giselle ~ October 2009

Your daughter Giselle just turned 4.  How do you feel about her growing up and going to school next year? Giselle- Its going to be hard to let her leave the nest, but since she is enrolled in pre school now, I think that will ease my pain. I feel that she is developing a great head on her shoulders, she knows whats right and wrong. I feel she will become even more independent, and I feel that will be great as I do not want her to rely on Mommy and Daddy for everything.

Do you have plans to have another baby? yes one day

What’s guaranteed to make you laugh? Well hands down my brother and my husband. They are always guaranteed to have some story about work or what has happened in their daily lives. Bad luck follows them I guess

Maurice Benard as Sonny Corinthos on General Hospital

I know you watch General Hospital.  Who is your favorite character and why? Sonny– hes rugged and tough but yet he loves his family to death

Are you on Twitter? Yes

What’s your favorite meal to cook? Stuffed Shells

Are you happy that you still live near where we grew up or do you wish you lived in a bigger city? No I am content. I think living in the country is great when you have kids.

What is your favorite vacation destination? Florida since I lived there for 2 years

What is your favorite book? The Notebook

Tell me an interesting fact about yourself: I am OCD

What other questions do you have for Jessica?

Mandy and her husband Jeremy ~ October 17, 2009 Photo credit - Michael T. Henry Photography

While brainstorming about what to write blogs about, I wanted to find a way for my readers to get to know some of the awesome people who I know.  The best way I could come up with was an interview series.

This week’s interviews are all going to have a military connection.  Meet my friend Mandy.  Mandy’s military connection is through her husband Jeremy who gets deployed to Antarctica on a regular basis.   We’re going to hear a bit more about Jeremy in tomorrow’s blog.  So stay tuned for that 🙂

Name: Mandy Westervelt

Age: 30

Location: Upstate, NY

Relationship Status: Married

Occupation: SEFCU Member Specialist

What made you leave retail full-time to go into banking? I wanted to spend more time with my now husband.  Banking hours are not as good as they used to be, but better than working in a mall.

Why don’t you subscribe to social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter? I don’t want to be part of the cult.  I just don’t have the time to update and check the sites all the time.  Those sites also seem a bit like stalking…if someone wants to invite me anywhere  or ask me how I am, they can contact me in real life.

What’s it like being married to someone in the military that gets deployed on a regular basis? It sucks!  Unfortunately, it comes with loving the man.  He is a wonderful man with a great job even though it causes me to be alone 3 months every year.

You work in a shoe store, just how crazy are women about their shoes? Most are not, they just appreciate shoes.  The worst is the people who do not appreciate shoes and return shoes after wearing them.  That is wrong-read the return policy!

What about men? Most men are clueless about shoes and they will bring me their pants and I pick out their shoes for them.  A few can pick out their own shoes, and most the time, they are gay.

What’s your favorite video game? All time would be the classic Tetris.  Lately, it has been Pet Vet for the Wii.  I didn’t think I would get into it at first, but the game is addicting.

You just got married this past October.  What was the most challenging part of planning your wedding? Dealing with my reception hall.  They had a wedding planner when I booked the place, and she left a year before my wedding and I had to make all the contacts after that point.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop? I’m a sucker, not a licker.  🙂

Do you have any questions for Mandy?
