It’s getting late in the day and I’ve been working on a blog, but it’s become more involved than I thought it would be so let’s save that one for another day. For now though I’ve been thinking about art. (you’ll see why when I post that other blog) I like different kinds of art. I’ve already told you about the Piccadilly Circus painting by Thomas Kinkade that I like here in my blog.
A few of my other favorites are these:
I saw “The Kiss” when I went to visit my Aunt Teresa in Milwaukee at the Milwaukee Art Museum about 5 years ago. Right away I loved it!
I saw the Primavera when I was in Florence, Italy at the Uffizi Gallery about 8 years ago.
I’ve always thought The Birth of Venus was beautiful. I found a nice print of it last summer at a tag sale and hopefully I can hang it in my office eventually. I also saw this painting at the when I was in Florence, Italy about 8 years ago.
This sculpture is found outside the Uffizi Gallery in the Loggia dei Lanzi on the corner of the Piazza della Signoria. “The Rape of the Sabine Women” implies abduction vs. the modern word rape.
Perhaps one of the most impressive works of art on the planet in my opinion has got to be the Sistine Chapel. I’ve been known to tell people “I don’t care if you’re Catholic, Lutheran, Methodist, Protestant, Baptist, Episcopalian, Jewish, Islamic, Mormon, Jehovah’s Witness, Buddhist, Atheist, etc. – go see the Sistine Chapel before you die. It’s breathtaking!” The chapel is located in Vatican City.
When I visited there I was able to rent a MP3 player that came with a “map” of the chapel. Each fresco has a corresponding number that I could punch into the player and it would tell me about the fresco. Who was in it, who they believe painted it and approximately when. One of the most popular paintings is in the very center of the ceiling.
It has also been called “The Creation of Adam” I think I spent about 3 hours in there just trying to take it all in. It wasn’t nearly long enough. I did have quite a cramp in my neck by the time I left though!
They say “The Last Judgment” was painted by Michelangelo between the years 1537 and 1541 and was painted nearly 3 decades after he painted the ceiling.
These are all works of art which I’ve seen. I have yet to see:

I’m not that sofisticated to say I enjoy a particular type of art. I more, like what I see when I see it. Riding cross country on a motorcycle opened my eyes and not for the first time, about how beautiful this country is and why I never want the trip to end.
Well ya know, in my eyes Mother Nature is quite the artist…. 😉
I’m a biggest fan of film as art. For example, when I watch movies by Kubrick, I can literally sit there for hours with things paused just to admire his sense of symmetry and composition.
As much as you will not agree, Rose, there is alot of porn and erotica that can be taken in artistically. While I agree, there is alot of raunchy stuff out there, there also are studios dedicated to portraying sex and sexuality as an art form, where it’s less about raunch and getting off and more about celebrating the human body. Of course it has to be in you to have this appreciation, and it’s not for everybody, so to each their own.
🙂
Kubrick was an interesting one for sure.
I can agree that some porn is a form of art for sure celebrating the human form. (It’s just not my favorite kind of art) For instance how about Eye’s Wide Shut? I did like that one, though I don’t consider that movie porn….
I am very fond of Eyes Wide Shut. My favorite part about that movie is his use of lights to wash out the picture and make it seem like a dream. On top of that, that film is relevant to what I am dealing with (and have dealt with in the past) on a personal level, so it really hits home for me.
🙂
I’m not really sure how it’s relevant to the current situation, but that’s okay. I HAS been a long time since I’ve seen the movie so maybe I need to dig it out and watch it again….
Kinkade is one of my favorite artists. There used to be a store in our mall that had repro’s of his works. I’d go in there and wish I could convince myself to spend upwards of $15 for a coffee mug. 🙂 Rockwell, though, will always be my absolute favorite. His style maybe be more cartoon-like than anything close to fine art, but his characters and his subject matter make me smile like crazy. Love the art you chose for the blog! xoxo
Well I have that Kinkade and it’s more than a print. It’s a canvas that he’s “re-touched” or something like that. I paid hundreds for it. It’s the most expensive piece of art I’ve ever purchased. I like Rockwell, he reminds me of childhood and to appreciate the simpler things…. I’m glad you enjoyed “my art.” 🙂 XOXO
The Birth of Venus and The Starry Night have always been favorites of mine. I’ve been taking random classes through schools for about two years now and I took an art appreciation class a year ago. I absolutely loved it! There was so much history and facts that I never would have known. It was definitely a worthwhile class because it makes art in all form so much more personal!
The history of why they painted them and who the paints are of is what makes some of them so interesting. For instance, Wikipedia says:
Botticelli never wed, and expressed a strong aversion to the idea of marriage, a prospect he claimed gave him nightmares.[8] The popular view is that he suffered from unrequited love for Simonetta Vespucci, a married noblewoman. According to legend, she had served as the model for The Birth of Venus and recurs throughout his paintings, despite the fact that she had died years earlier, in 1476. Botticelli asked that when he die he be buried at her feet in the Church of Ognissanti in Florence. His wish was carried out when he died some 34 years later, in 1510.
Interesting huh??
